The first freight train has left the UK and will begin its 3-week journey to China, cutting the journey time by a half when compared to shipping times. The train will travel through France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan before entering China. However, the containers will have to be unloaded in Belarus as former Soviet States have a wider gauge. Although it is a small amount of freight at present, it marks another significant step in the development of China’s ‘One Belt, One road’ policy. A policy which has the potential to bring greater investment into Central Asia.
