The election campaign for the next Kyrgyz President has begun, so far 13 candidates have been registered for the 15th October vote. The current incumbent, President Atambaev, is constitutionally barred from a third term. Critics have accused Atambaev of attempting to influence the election to maintain influence, most notably by the governments prosecution of political rivals under corruption charges. Currently the favourites to win the presidency are Respublika party candidate Omurbek Babanov and Ak-Shumkar’s candidate Temir Sariev. The election will likely highlight the ongoing discussion over whether Kyrgyzstan should be a presidential or parliamentary system.
