27/03/17 - Kyrgyzstan - Opposition Arrests

Almambert Shykmamatov has been charged with corruption. Shykmamatov becomes the second member of Ata-Meken, after party leader Omurbek Tekebayev, to be charged in the last month. This is while media outlets Radio Free Europe and Zanoza.kg have been targeted by lawsuits from the prosecutor’s office in Bishkek, on the behest of President Atambayev. Many fear this may be the start of a surreptitious opposition crackdown fuelled by Atambayev’s desire to move his party and allies into a position of power for the upcoming presidential elections, as a constitutional limit prevents Atambayev from running for President again.
