President Rahmon Prepares Succession Contingency

Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliaments has approved legal
amendments that lower the eligibility age from 35 to 30 for legislative positions
in parliaments upper house, and most importantly for the presidency.

This amendment seems to have occurred so that President Emomali
Rahmon can manoeuvre his 30-year-old son, Rustam Emomali, into contention for a
possible succession.

However, President Rahmon (65) is unlikely to make any
dramatic changes soon, particularly after the May 2016 referendum allowed him
to have unlimited terms in office. Nevertheless, the President clearly has his
eyes on the future, and wants to have a system in place to ensure continuity.
